Sticking with Jamie's Garden

Like many kids around the country, as well as many other adults who have confessed to enjoying a bit of sticker book action, I am a little bit sad that the Jamie's Garden free sticker promotion has come to an end. While I keep my sceptics cap on with most chain supermarket promotions, especially those with a health related angle, the Jamie's Garden  sticker book is a fantastic resource to use with kids to encourage healthy eating and learn about fruit and veggies.

My question to you now is: Will you continue to use the book to engage your kids and help develop their skills and interest in healthy eating? Or will the book become another dust-collecting item that nobody uses but nobody wants to throw out?

The recently released data from the 2011-2012 National Nutrition & Physical Activity Survey (NNPAS) showed that less than 7% of us eat our recommended serves of veggies each day. Less than 7%! As well as this, roughly a quarter (by weight) of all veg consumed is potato. In a time where you can't turn on the telly or open a magazine without hearing someone talking about the latest nutrition fad, it's hard to believe that we are struggling to get the basics right. This is why it's so important to help the next generation learn how to identify, prepare, enjoy and appreciate basic unprocessed foods. Jamie's Garden is such a fabulous tool to help you do this.

So don't lose this one to the back of the bookshelf, keep talking about it. When the kids say "I'm bored" these school holidays, why not flip the book open and do one of the activities or make one of the recipes. You could make a plan to read about one different type of vegetable each week and get the kids busy in the kitchen. Even most adults I know (including myself!) would find snippets of information in there that they didn't already know, so just have some fun reading and learning together.

Let's face it, at the end of the day if you have all 128 stickers, this book cost $645 worth of groceries. May as well put it to good use!

If your kids (or yourself) are trying to complete their book but missing some of the stickers, I have some double ups that I'm happy to send your way. If you need any of the numbers in the pictures below, contact Rethink Nutrition here and I'll get them out to you.

Happy reading, learning and cooking everyone!
